It was a very good year... right?

It’s awards season, and here at CM we’ve been pondering our favourite music technology happenings over the past twelve months. Here are some of our most treasured moments from the last year:

The Good

• Windows XP running on Intel Macs

• The rise of Reaper

• The KVR Developer Challenge

• Zebra 2, possibly the best soft synth ever

• SSL Duende

Of course for every Golden Globe there has to be a Razzie, so here are some of the less than scintillating things that we’ve endured:

The Bad

• Sonalog Gypsy MIDI – nice idea but so expensive

• Arturia Brass – failed to give us the horn

• Increasingly irritating copy protection mechanisms

• Wave Idea Bitstream 3X – wonky sliders

Those are our high and low-lights, but what have you loved and loathed over the last twelve months? Leave a comment to let us know!

Good: CME's UF range of cheap midi controllers, great build quality and features for a low price.

Bad: The shonky drivers for CME's range of cheap midi controllers.

GOOD: Macbook Pro C2D. Digidesign's Music Production Toolkit. Pro Tools 7.3. MBox Pro 2. Albino 3. Komplete 4. rachmiel's Off The Dial column & Compter Music's in depth tutorials. Arksun's "Arisen".

BAD: Software developers dragging their arses to release UB versions of their products. Music and the obligatory visual backdrop. No new Reason. 2 years on from the "death" of Coil's Jhonn Balance.

Good: Mac goes Intel and can run both OSX and Windows.

More cool stuff in the CM Studio.

Bad: Copy protection

Copy protection

(The incentive to buy legit software is fading by the minute as these draconian schemes further complicate our pastime and threaten to make it actually easier to use a pirate version.)

Oh, hate to grumble further, but it is a bit disappointing that most of the really exciting bits of new hardware include an audio interface. If you've already got a good audio card, it seems to limit your options, unless you want to pay extra for features you're not going to use.

Good: EzDrummer, LiquidMix, Amplitube 2, Cubase 4,CM's latest software.

Bad: Copy protection (particularly on EzDrummer. Pain or what!!!) Namm - disappointing show. Too many rehashes of old things.

All in all a pretty good year though.

Can we have a feature on big studios please? I want to know all about places like Abbey Road, even though I'm never going to go there!

TapeOp magazine is well worth checking out for articles on studios of all sizes. They had a great piece on Peter Gabriel's RealWorld studios a while back.

Good; Sonar 6 producer edition update

bad; buying Waves Diamond Bundle, then having
it trashed by Vista, along with all your
other dxii (plural?)

VERY BAD; Syncrosoft, Sony rootkit DRM cd's
still being sold, Windows DRM (guess i'm
gonna have be a criminal, coz if I gotta
pay for the ticket, i'm gonna enjoy the
show...)

SATAN himself; oops sorry, no politics here...
